Sitcom Analysis

Inbetweeners-The Fashion Show

In this blog post i will be looking at a specific sitcom and analyse how the sitcom is structured through three dynamic parts.

The first being character analysis in the group of the four main characters there are Neil,Simon,Will and Jay they all play a specific role in the formal that is the Inbettweeners. Jay often plays the immature liar of the group who is regarded as to annoying one of the butch who lies about his exploits but is often called out by the other three next is his side kick Neil who is quite slow and looks like the younger brother of the lot with his lack of inelegance and ability to follow Jay no matter what lie he exclaims.

Will is the more mature of the group as he likes to control everything that is going on but often gets rejected by his friends and then is bullied and pushed by the other three to do things he finds immature. However he often puts his foot down to make his point known all though this fail he plays a more failed parent character like a mum or dad who is not listened to but is also the one the group look to for advice that they don't follow. Simon is Will best friend and often plays another mature role but is often mislead as he is in love with a girl and seeks advice from the other three although he is often looked at as the more easy going parent of the group as he lets the boys do what they want like an easy going mother.

All this is seen in this episode as Will disapproves of fashion shows as he sees them to unfair where as Jay is more interested as being part of the show but often lies about past tense stories that the group see through. Neil is simple and desire to see women and Simon is offered a place as a model which causes disagreement with Jay and Will but for different reasons Wills being that its unfair and Jays being that he isn't in the show.

As we see in this episode the narrative is an close narrative starting with the fundraiser Fashion show for an ill schoolmate that the group do not approve off. This goes further when will is forced to take money for the show shattering his morals and making him feel unapapracteried. Meanwhile Simon has a role as a model for the show which displeases Jay causing much disagreement between the two friends this is act one of the story as this is the situation that the boys have been put into.

Act 2 coming to a close ensues the help of Will to perform in the fashion show all for the means to hook up with a girl this angers the ill boy who finds Will horrible for finding the show unfair this then causes the ill boy to retaliate by calling him a hypocrite. However will does not care as he wants to be with his crush. Meanwhile Simon is offered a chance to prove his self to his crush by wearing an obscene outfit this causes him to get nervous and then furthermore causes him to have a wardrobe malfunction exposing part of his gentile region. After this performance both of the boys are shot down by there crushes will being rejected by his crush and Simons crush being upset and embarrassed by the incident. This gets Simon in trouble later on.

After the events the boys meet up and are reunited and have all had a bad night but yet they are back in there own little world only to once again await what will happen next time the show is over and the narrative is closed with all the boys once again not in a good situation.

The sitcom is shot on multiple cameras in a closed set inside a six form college shot from internal locations they are often set in the same areas either inside the college itself the characters home or in there local area. However in some of the episodes they are shot on separate locations to give more story. Furthermore there are multiple shots in Simons or Jays car with camera mounts attached on the car. This could be actual live footage or studio made green screen footage.

There are multiple shots from wide shots to get all the group into the shot but depending on the circumstance there is often shots reserve shots, close ups or over the shoulder shots and finally the lighting is often due to the time of day depending on if they group are outside or have light in from the windows. But some shots have lighting provided in some of the dark rooms. The conversation often leads the way the edit is made it cuts from person to person. The sound is often diegetic to do with the setting however multiple voice overs from Will as narrator and indie music to set the mood in scene are used as well these are refereed to as non-diegetic sounds.
